On November 27, Jéssica Grant, who holds a Master’s degree from the Graduate Program in English Language and Literature Studies, will give the lecture “Derry Girls and the History of a Conflict.” Derry was the setting for several key events during the Northern Ireland conflict, known as the Troubles. Yet, even through 30 years of war, everyday life carried on with (almost) normality. This duality is portrayed in Derry Girls, a TV series that presents the lives of teenagers interwoven with historical episodes of the Troubles. In this session, we will observe how the show’s three seasons intertwined important moments of the conflict with the characters’ stories, helping to deepen the understanding of the Troubles.
Jéssica holds degrees in Journalism (Faculdade Cásper Líbero) and in Languages – English and Portuguese (University of São Paulo – USP). She also earned a Master’s degree in English Language and Literature Studies from USP, where she researched Northern Irish literature. She is the author of the book O poder de lembrar: narrativa, memória e trauma cultural em The International, de Glenn Patterson. Currently, she works in institutional communication in the non-profit sector.
The event “Encontro com os Estudos Irlandeses” is an initiative of the W. B. Yeats Chair of Irish Studies, aiming to promote discussions on contemporary topics in the field of Irish Studies based on the research conducted by graduate students from the Graduate Program in English Language and Literary Studies (FFLCH/USP).
