Synopsis: At the height of the rubber cycle, Irishman Roger Casement, then British consul-general in Brazil, made two trips to the upper Amazon region, in 1910 and 1911, to investigate allegations of violence and slavery committed against indigenous Brazilians, Peruvians and Colombians. Suspicions fell on the Peruvian Amazon Company, a company financed by the London Stock Exchange and operated by white Peruvian managers. Casement recorded and made public the atrocities suffered by the natives, almost always silenced by political and economic interests, which accelerated the end of the rubber extraction market.
