Joe McHugh, TD
Chief Whip and Minister of State at the Department of Culture with responsibility for Gaeilge, Gaeltacht and the Islands, Donegal.
Joe McHugh TD is Government Chief Whip and Minister of State at the Department of Culture with responsibility for Gaeilge, Gaeltacht and the Islands. He previously served as Minister of State for the Diaspora and International Development. He was previously appointed as Co-Chairperson of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly in July 2011. In July 2012 Deputy McHugh was elected as Chairperson of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. Deputy McHugh was re-elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fine Gael TD for Donegal North-East in February 2011.
Joe was born on the 16th of July 1971. He is the second eldest of five children. His father Denis McHugh was a builder and farmer and Mrs Mary McHugh worked as a District Nurse. The family continues to reside at Claggan, Carrigart.
Maureen Murphy is Professor of Curriculum and Teaching, Director of the Secondary English programs and Co-Director of the undergraduate Irish Studies minor in HCLAS. She has served as Interim Dean of the School of Education and Health and Human Services (2005-2008), the University's Dean of Students for more than a decade and acting Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Teaching. Murphy was the Director of the Great Irish Famine Curriculum Project for the New York State Department of Education. A past president of the American Conference for Irish Studies and a past chair of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures, Murphy has lectured and published widely in Irish literature, folklore, history and American Irish literature and culture. Murphy has written more than 100 articles and book chapters and delivered more than 300 lectures in eighteen countries.
Alexander Hijmans was born in The Netherlands in 1975 and educated in Ireland, where he studied Irish and journalism (through the medium of Irish) at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). He graduated in 1997 and spent the following twelve years working in various Irish language media: Foinse (a newspaper), Raidió na Gaeltachta (Irish language radio) and finally as a reporter for national tv broadcasters Nuacht TG4 and RTÉ. He moved to Salvador, Brazil nearly a decade ago but remains one of the most productive voices in Irish language writing – in journalism, but also in fiction. He is a core contributor to the main Irish language news portal Tuairisc.ie and since 2009 has published six books in Irish: two works of non-fiction, two novels and two short story collections. Out of these, both works of non-fiction, one novel and one short story collection are set in Brazil.
Tom Hennigan is The Irish Times’s correspondent for South America. Previously based in Buenos Aires, he is currently located in São Paulo from where he covers the region’s political, social and economic developments.
