Literary Studies in English aim to lead the student to know not only the canonical literature produced in English, but also the colonial and post-colonial writings. Ireland becomes an object of study in Latin America because it was England's first colonial experiment and presents a historical process like the Spanish and Portuguese colonies that managed to become independent a century earlier and whose revolutionary movements relied on the presence of Irish immigrants and soldiers. The discipline offers a contemporary Latin American perspective. It analyses different Irish literary representations in dialogue with other areas, contexts, and socio-historical and artistic movements, such as the relationship between literary work and filmic discourse, theater, painting and media studies, also incorporating the approach of cultural studies in the area of humanities. This discipline develops the student's perceptive and analytical capacity, making him aware of the critical-interpretive analysis and discussion of literary representations of the formal and thematic aspects that constitute them.
Objetivos
- To participate in na international Latin American Seminar.
- To study characteristics of literary texts in English from the authors’ theoretical viewpoints.
- To analyse various literary genres that became landmarks of diferente periods and aesthetic trends from an interdisciplinary perspective ;
- To study interdisciplinary connections between literature, history, sociology, translation and other arts.
- To reconsider issues of literature and language at the centre and periphery, in the contemporary context of Ireland’s changing relationship with its tradition and Latin America.
- To interact with professors and students from Latin American Universities: Universidad Nacional de México and Universidad Nacional de La Pampa.
Conteúdo Programático
Every time the seminar is offered, it will tackle new Irish themes and authors to attend the expectation of the students, keeping unaltered the abstract and aims of the subject. Examples of Irish topics: history, culture and arts; changing perceptions of the nation; nationalism, hybridity and Irish and Latin American multiculturalism; questions of identity – ethnicity, race, class and gender; post-colonial literatures and decolonization.
