XIX Simpósio de Estudos Irlandeses na América do Sul

banner simposio

The theme of the 19th Symposium of Irish Studies in South America, Narratives of Responsibility: Ethics, Environment, and the Arts, was inspired by the upcoming COP 30, which will be held in northern Brazil, in Belém do Pará, in 2025. This is the first time Brazil will host a United Nations Climate Change Conference, which may inspire Symposium participants to reflect on the role of literature, music, visual and performing arts in narrating the story of the present for future generations.

In the Humanities, both collective and individual responsibility should aim to build new bridges across different fields of knowledge in order to understand the environmental crisis currently affecting the world and to create solutions that can drive meaningful change. It is also an opportunity to consider how Irish Studies—often marked by self-reflection and an affinity with the Humanities—offers a privileged perspective to question the practice of responsibility in contemporary times.

Date: October 14–16, 2024.
Location: University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.
