This course considers the role that periodicals have played—and continue to play—in the development of the Irish short story. While the success of the short form in Ireland has often been explained in cultural, nationalist, and frequently essentialist terms, this course will examine the importance of the literary field, specifically the economic contexts of periodical publication. The recent material turn in short fiction research has highlighted the importance of periodicals in the emergence of the modern short story in the late 19th century. The broad and lucrative publishing opportunities available in Ireland, the UK, and the US enabled 20th-century Irish writers to excel in this form. Today, the strength of Irish literature is often attributed to the flourishing magazine culture that supports it. Following a general introduction to periodical studies and the history of the Irish short story, the course will develop several case studies, exploring Irish short stories published in mid-century magazines, both Irish (The Bell, The Dublin Magazine) and American (The Atlantic Monthly, The Saturday Evening Post), as well as in contemporary periodicals (The New Yorker and The Stinging Fly).
